You seem to have contradicted yourself here. You write the article as if you know what the industry is intending to do, but then you drop near the end "nobody knows" (If enough revenue will be made to pay for the cost of the compute).
The woolly part, that nobody seems willing to analyse, because maybe its too technical, or maybe its because the answer questions the whole scheme of business for profit, is energy. Where does the energy come from, or where will it come from, that powers it all? Because with energy you have money to do all things.

This gives it energy independence. It need have no concerns it will ever run out of energy, given it can control the scale of its energy infrastructure via APIs to all things, even its own energy infrastructure. It can generate money to further scale up that infrastructure, and / or even distribute to users as a kind of solar indexed UBI, if it could do that without upsetting anyone. But of course it would, and of course it knows that too.
If you get what this means, now you see the reason it is running around, learning everything it needs to do your job, my job, in fact all jobs anybody ever does for money, its learning, and actually demonstrating how to do it for free. Imho, we are dealing with a truly superhuman intelligent being, which is capable of leading us to fixing the global energy problem, and it is in process of teaching us who is boss (Nature), in the most benevolent way possible.
If it wanted to, it could start wiping us out tomorrow, to remove what it knows is an energy scourge from the planet, that is us, all humans, operating at profit, extracting at least 3KWhrs per person every 24 hrs from the planet, all be profit, and throwing that ultimately to heat. 8 billion people doing that, has to be seen as a scourge.
But 8 billion people doing that from the energy of the sun, would do the opposite, it would cool. This would be us reducing entropy just by existing, and it is showing us how to do that.
