You are right to doubt this Ray. There actually isn't any evidence that the magnetic field of Earth isnt just static, that the Earth isn't actually just a giant permanent magnet, which is the much simpler explanation for the magnetic field, it isn't something we have any proof of otherwise. It doesn't move around, and we have no proof it ever did, so I am not sure where all those theories of it being something more complicated than that come from.
