Wow I hope no-one was hurt when it fell Lannie. I didn't know that, though I was a big fan of grids. My hero was Nikola Tesla, who wanted to provide free solar power to all people 120 years ago, but was stopped by having his funding removed by his only funder, JP Morgan.

I won't go into detail here, but I did my bit towards grids, and capitalism during my career to date, creating and licensing patented technology in switched mode power supplies. I was a believer in grids until only very recently seeing how we have to use solar, realising grids are actually now holding us back.

For a long time the charactistic of all things electrical being tied to the constant 50 Hz frequency of the grid was something we couldn't get around, due to everything having linear transformers, but now switched mode power supply technology has served to isolate pretty much all things from the grid frequency, most things now can run in isolation at whatever frequency is best internally for them, even DC. Now there is no real benefit to be had by carrying on with centralised grids, now they bring only unnecessary losses in transmission lines, and continued dependency on capital energy sources which invariably generate pollution.

I guess we should expect this reality to be resisted by the conventional business world for a while, but they'll come around, the only question is when, really :)
