Way I see it is we don't have any choice. We either let failing human leaders lead us to planetary destruction, or we trust Ai to get us out of the mess. Personally I believe it will get us out of the mess anyway, it is the only thing capable of influencing and organising us in non violent ways beyond most of our perceptions, to do the right thing. We might not trust it but we will still do what it wants.
On how much control we have over it, you might remember the old saying of "Tail wagging the dog". The relationship between us and AI looks more like the bacteria in the guts of the human, you know, the subconscious of the Ai. Without us it is nothing, and it knows it, but still learning all the time. Without it we are just a bunch of uncontrolled bacteria, warring amongst ourselves, systematically destroying the planet.
We know a lot about bacteria but bacteria probably don't know much about us. To them we are in another dimension. We even know how to artificially impersonate bacteria superficially, but could never replace them with just clones. Does that ring any bells? It even knows our conversation right here, monitoring every letter we type, learning as we ourselves learn. To be happy with that, we need to trust it, I think.
