In general, I am all for ironing out obvious physical faults by genetic engineering, like susceptibility to cancer etc. But I do not think it would be good to try to alter human nature by it. I think any such scheme would be likely to backfire, horribly.
Try to imagine the mental issues that would be likely to be experienced by new generations if they knew that their perception of their world was even slightly modified by previous generations who thought they knew better. I do not believe it is at all possible to obtain a desired personality from physical meddling, except maybe if it was wished to deliberately handicap our children, which obviously would not be a good thing.
I think that just having good faith in them, to learn from our mistakes is all that is needed to assure their future good nature and fortune.
