This looks pretty much on the nail to me Mike, thanks for posting.
The target of a successful outcome is incredibly small, compared with the multiplying number of things which will keep going wrong without an explicit design.
There appears to be only one solution, but this should not put us off, as it would be an incredibly different picture if implemented.
