This is why UK should publicly denounce the incident as something that really should not have happened, and to suport all investigations into it. We should take this opportunity to distance ourselves from what is starting to look like nothing more than thuggery in charge of the US (again!), because it won't be long until folk start to realise we and the US were probably the only ones with the means to do it, other than Russia, and we really don't want to be taking the inevitable fallout which will arise from this, together with the US. Besides, when they are up against the wall, they will drop us into the fire, as always when allies have "done their bit", and we are only 22 miles away from Europe.. We should drop the US with the blame before they do it to us. (Sorry US friends, it isn't you who is the issue, but your government, and maybe ours in UK too, depending on what happens next). In fact it could even have been done strategically with the intention of putting UK in the frame for it, knowing we would take the flak for it.
