This is an interesting angle, thanks for posting. Just to say though; water is becoming the preferred Medium to transport heat dissipated away from servers, it isn't the only way of cooling them, many data centres just settle for air cooling, there is no intrinsic dependence of them on water consumption.
Further, the water need not be exhausted to the air, if the water was taken from nearby sea or river it can just be returned back to there, this getting the heat away from the servers.
What should be more concerning is the heat itself, this goes into the environment however we cut it, pushing up the planetary temperature.
If the source of the energy dissipated from servers was materials of Earth, like fossil fuels, or even nuclear, then this heat was created from things in Earth which were not originally heat, so the net effect on temperature of Earth is temperature rise, just by E=MC squared, no need to consider CO2.
But if the energy came from solar, which heats the Earth if we don't use it, and nature doesn't use it, then our use of it, if that results in the creation of anything at all, other than heat, then it has to result in a reduction of planetary temperature. Notice this is the exact reverse of what happens by energy extracted from Earth. In the latter case we are creating, adding things to Earth other than temperature, whereas in the former, extracting from Earth is destruction, subtracting things from Earth which were created by nature, converting those to heat.
So the solution to powering servers whilst having positive impact to resources, all resources, since they are all created from energy, even water, is to ensure all things are powered by solar. We can't do much wrong by that.
Further, when we do it for real, 100% solar will require we move to money issued for free, because the energy from solar is for free, only money issued for free can monetise it, so we will have massive UBI, probably all controlled by Ai, since only it has the ability to see the whole system of humanity and nature combined, it makes logical sense for it to be the controller of money, issued to all folk as an unconditional solar indexed UBI.
This means all bills will become free, including for water, we won't have to pay for it any longer.
Further, it will figure out that creation of hydrogen from solar provides a fuel which functionally replaces fossil fuels with none of the pollution, and that the most effective way to produce it is by all communities equipped with their own community solar facilities, which we could easily all afford and would wish to have, given the solar indexed UBI, and maximisation of hydrogen production would be how to maximise creation, thus ultimately reduction of planetary temperature, increasing the financial rewards for all.
This brings us back to water, water is an unavoidable input of hydrogen creation, but it is also an unavoidable output of hydrogen consumption.
A side effect of cycling water to and from hydrogen is filtration. Purified water is obtained from hydrogen consumption whereas creation of hydrogen can be from brackish water.
So the end result of a domestic and community based solar hydrogen ecology, powering all things, no need for grids, is filtration and circulation of water between all communities, by way of transportation consuming hydrogen refillable from all places, travelling to all places, given each will collect and exchange the water produced for hydrogen fills received.
Notice this removes the need also for lithium batteries in all places. EVs, and ICE vehicles, even aeroplanes are all convertible to use hydrogen.
Ai will figure all of this out, faster than we can blink, I think.
Exciting times! :)
