There is an assumption in this, that those who set the law know best. But no human can know that, it's superhuman by definition. With respect, anyone arguing they think they know best is acting on ego, and they maybe don't know this themselves.
It's the same as trying to appoint human leaders, to be in charge of masses of other humans, no single one, or even tribe can know better than the masses of other tribes.
Metcalfe's law gives you the only reasonable and enforcable rule - let it all go free, in fact make it all more free, expose people to the maximum information of all others.
This is what connectivity means in a network. Rather than restricting flow of information, enhance it. Same with money. Same with energy.
Put it all into the public domain so that the puplic are who judges what is good and bad, and that can change with time, rules set in stone are useless because everything is changing, developing.
The act of chopping information out of a network can only do harm, its like trying to take all the errors out of the information - if all the errors are removed, nobody knows what is good and bad because the information to contrast good with, is gone. This is how extremism happens in bubbles, everybody loses reference to reality.
Right now we are all in the biggest bubbles ever seen, and this is destroying the planet, and nobody actually knows the real reason, because the real research, which questions even conventional science for profit, is not getting around.
Metcalfe's law should be elevated to statutory to take out all the arguments of who knows best to set rules - its the only rule enforcable, and a framework of law could be drawn up from that.
That is the result we should wish for, if we want truth, and avoidance of extinction. We are headed for extinction right now already, the only chance we have of avoiding it, is for everyone to become aware that we live in a world of Enshittopia, so far removed from reality its hard for most of us to imagine, and there are forces at work right now, biblical scale forces that we need to know the real truth of, to be able to see what way we need to move, for survival.
You won't have that, with humans deciding what information can be removed from general consumption.
