There are other ways to get off the grid Tovah, it is common to do with batteries, which do get a much higher efficiency of storage, but batteries will never keep planes in the air, and there will never be any capability for batteries to produce something we can sell, (Or even eat - see "Solein"), if we happen to experience an excess of energy, more than the battery can store. Use of hydrogen gives us the flexibility of being able to sell it, which in turn gives us the ability to plow even more money into our installation, or the installations of neighbors etc, this is a little like how trees work, converting energy to nutrients, that it passes mosty to Earth, after it has taken what it needs to scale itself up.

Personally I think the Aerospace industry should realise the potential of this, and start subsidising folk to develop into hydrogen production. Remember the more energy we can put to use from the sun, the quicker the temperature gets wound back down - batteries put some pretty hard limits on what we can do there, besides them being thamselves a form of extraction - hundreds of kilos of lithium needed for a single domestic backup, unless maybe the installation can stand having a mountain of lead-acid batteries somewhere - all of it limits what can be put to use, whereas there is no limit with hydrogen.
