Perhaps the fundamental issue is that the conventional political system itself is failing.
If ordinary people feel that the government no longer serves them, no matter right or left, in government, those with ambitions to govern end up pursuing the same government-centric agendas and foreign policies that result in colonialism, war, inequality, and dystopia, then the ideas of left and right no longer apply, and there is no democracy, it is a dictatorship regardless of which side gets in.
I think Noam is aware of this also. He is still part of it by being an academic in the establishment, so he needs to choose his words carefully, therefore he himself has no real freedom of speech, and he surely knows it.
