No, only in the special case that cryptocurrency is also generated, interchangeably with hydrogen. Hydrogen generation alone from solar without crypto is every day practice in many places. "Economic viability" conventionally means is it profitable, the answer is that profit can't technically be calculated, since the cost of the energy from the sun is zero, the sun asked nothing in return for it. Therefor the ratio of what is returned compared with what it cost is infinite.
When we hear of profits or lack of profits applied to solar, it is usually because a lifetime was put on the amount of energy which would be received, set by the lifetime of a single panel, and this traded off against the cost of the installation.
But the real benefit of solar is completely lost by this treatment, if we did the same with an apple tree we would be trading the cost of purchasing the tree, against the apples it might produce in one year, since this would be lifetime of a single leaf of the tree.
The benefit of hydrogen generation alone from solar is missed by only considering it in terms of profit, no money is issued for it added to economy, so instead of seeing benefit from it, all we are seeing is inflation, because as supply and use of hydrogen scales up, and captures more of the energy market, extracted energy, which is the thing monetised by money as debt, is scaling down. So money as debt is coming to represent nothing, creation of product is increasingly outpacing issue of money, hence why we see inflation, which will not stop, until money is issued for free, reflecting the energy received for free from the sun (It asked nothing in return).
The point is that the economy of all things for profit only works with extracted energy, it does not work for solar. The energy received from solar is mathematically the opposite of energy from extraction. When we put these two kinds of energy together, as we are doing, they literally subtract from each other in terms of economy.
Conventional economists don't get this because they don't know enough about physics, and conventional scientists don't get this because they don't know enough about economics.
But we can't ignore it now, it will devalue all money to zero, as long as money reflecting the free energy received is not issued.
Hopefully now you see how nature is forcing our hand, she will not give up on this one, she has the greedies at check, with one move to mate, it seems to me.
