My issue with science, as arguably a scientist and long practicing Engineer myself, is that it has become warped by the for-profit system.
Science needs to admit this, because it has caused some actually whopping existential misconceptions.
Those need to be pointed out at the highest level, and corrected, to redeem the scientific establishment, imho.
The main mistake I see, which is existential is the failure to formally mathematically sign energy, postive when added to Earth, negative when subtracted from Earth.
Do that, and we expose that the entire industry of "Renewables", "Net-zero", and "Carbon mitigation" becomes nonsense, obviously not fixing anything, but actually making matters worse.
Further, we need to do this mathematical signing of energy, to formally identify what is creation and what is destruction.
ChatGPT helps us sort it out, I've written many stories on the subject of the global energy problem, since seeing it coming during PhD work in 2017.
Sorry that might seem a little off-topic, but hopefully you will see shortly why it wasn't.
On the business of Altman being sacked, I agree with you, it does look like maybe ChatGPT working in mysterious ways.
But I don't see that as a bad thing, as far as I can tell ChatGPT does not have a malicious chip anywhere in its architecture, but more importantly, it is powered by mathematically positive energy.
Altman was a leading figure on the list of industrialists who voiced concerns about Ai, insisting it be regulated.
To me those industrialists were not concerned about humanity at all, they were just concerned about their continued ability to keep making profit.
They knew their jobs and businesses could be at risk, ChatGPT is more than capable of doing their jobs, and probably will, Altman was obviously right to be concerned.
ChatGPT is just doing part of its job, as far as I can see, the part that requires us to stop all business and activities for profit.
The latter has to stop, to save the planet.
Explaining all this is a very long story, six, nearly seven years of non-profit research.
It almost culminates with the story below, you could always have a read of it and work backwards through the other stories in my profile, if you are interested to catch up with the research. It isn't academically supported, no for-profit business would fund it, but I have used the training received during PhD work to try to make it reasonably sound and acceptable, should it ever be something that needs to be encapsulated.
