Mike I think it is really unfair to lump open source and profit seeking proprietary “Black box” algorithms together, it only muddies the waters. Open source software never has issues of being undemocratic because it is open for all of the public to see. Democracy and Ethics by definition are things defined by the public. Why would they not produce democratic and ethical software? The perpetrators of unethical, undemocratic, or otherwise malicious algorithms should be clearly identified as those building things which are not under the watchful eye of the public.
