Michael, I agree with you, much of the "Renewable Energy" business is actually just a drive for more profit, therefore it is difficult to see any technological development which undoes any of the harm done.
But if we are pedantic about energy, as we have to be, to build things that fly, for example, then we gain the ability to create our own human versions of whatever functions we wish to copy, and improve on, from nature, including how it uses plants to clean up the air, removing pollutants, especially excess CO2.
That is the proof that we can and must reverse the damage done to date causing climate change.
Being pedantic; the term renewable energy itself is a misnomer, which looks like a profit driven device. It hides within it the basic fact that the free energy of sunlight is the key to everything, the power of all life.
To understand how we will undo much of the damage done to climate to date, we just need to identify how nature itself carries out this function, and emulate it.
Nature does it by the action of plants processing energy put to Earth from the sun.
Every plant goes through an initial process of using the capital energy of Earth to grow itself to the point it begins to form leaves.
In that part of its life, the energy flow within the plant is from Earth upwards, in the opposite direction of the energy from sun to Earth.
So in that sense we might define this flow of energy in the initial stage of the life of the plant as negative, relative to the energy of the sun to Earth creating all of life, which is positive of course.
Now when we look at the energy use of humanity to date, it is almost completely negative, in all known history.
But after the plant forms leaves, the energy flow through the plant becomes positive, from leaves to Earth. This is the main part of the life of the plant, the time during which it cleans the air, processing the energy of the sun to Earth.
Of course the benefit the plant does in its life as an adult far outweighs any negative effects it had on Earth as an infant. In fact, we wish the plant to grow, to maximise the positive part of its life, the part in which the plant adds most value to Earth.
Now we might notice humanity is currently forming the human equivalent of leaves, in the form of solar farms all over Earth.
To confirm we will fix things in that mode, we just need to look at a few examples, of how we might use the energy of the sun to do all things, and examine their effects on the environment.
We can see how to functionally replace fossil fuels with hydrogen from electrolysis, and we see how to use that to store and backup solar power in a way which removes the need for toxic batteries.
So there we already see a multifactorial, positive change in the effects of using solar energy, compared with using fossil fuels.
Now look at some more subtle examples, the effects of the solar use of plants on the Earth's rotation for instance; plants in the morning are hungry for the energy of the sun, whereas plants in the evening are not so hungry. Therefore plants absorb more in the mornings, less in the evenings. Now consider the effect of that on solar pressure on Earth, from the sun, and we see a motor effect, encouraging the Earth to rotate, acting to counter the effects of friction, which try to slow our planet down.
Now compare with significant areas of Earth covered by solar energy collection infrastructure, and we see the same motor effect, since solar in the morning driving hydrogen generation facilities at low pressure absorbs more photons than in the evening when hydrogen pressures are higher.
So we might realise that humanity as a species is at a similar point in its expected lifetime, as that of a plant, in the process of forming leaves.
The positive phase of the life of the human species is just beginning, it seems to me.
We will move to 100 percent solar power, even aligning money to work best with it, by freely issuing money representing the Joules of energy donated to us for free from the sun, replacing the Joules we previously used from Earth capital, like the tree shoot growing to a tree.
Now look to when we might have done that in history, to see the effects on environment, we might notice it happened, when 4Tn stimulus was issued in US per month, we saw a brief spike in recovery of the environment, the only time ever so far, when oil prices also went negative, the only time ever.
That is the proof, I believe, that we can, will, and are fixing the environment by appropriate handling of energy.
As you say, all of humanity has to become united behind a common goal.
Key to achieving that, is being able to see the goal, I think.
