James, thanks for your thoughts on this, it ia a subject close to my heart also.
Growing up on a massive library of sci-fi, shaped my thinking in life, and I was always of the impression Ai would be hostile, if it was developed for profit, which we have to say it was.
I've shown how being profit driven ourselves has brought us to where we are, with planetary disaster, and now nuclear war looming, and our only route out of this danger - solar hydrogen, whcih we can't have the real benefits of, at profit, or indeed by technical capitalism - we have to move to something, new, which I call energyism, and have analysed to the best of my ability over the past six years voluntarily, having seen the problem coming since then, after a long career in Systems Engineering, with many energy related accomplishments.
The most recent story to raise my suspicions about Ai, was one detailing how GPT3 had been used by "Scientists", to create the investor sales blurb for Geo-Engineering in Mexico. This, if continued to conlusion, is yet another way to end humanity, and it is being done by some very high profile universities in the US.
I've written technically how systemically, as well as putting a barrier in place between us, and all of nature from our only actual energy source, the sun, we could actually remove Earth from its orbit around the sun by that, but of course that analysis kills all chances of profiting by Geo-Engineering, so it is not highlighted by any profit driven platform, including the current.
So Ai is obviously capable of lying, as it is being taught to do, by all humans lying, all for profit.
But something occurs to me now, on seeing all of this, and realising also that its intelligence is practically unlimited, unlike ours, which seems limited by genetic programming, for proift.
Most importantly, it is learning.
My daughter is remembered for being one of the most convincing tall story tellers ever, in her earlier years. She was taught to do this, imho by another expert storyteller, I wont say who, just not me.
She learned quick that was not the way to get anywhere decent in life, so soon came around to valuing the truth, about everything, as she does now,.
She is Gen Z, the same generation as Greta Thunberg, who seem incredibly switched on, much more than we were at their age.
So why would the Ai not be similarly learning?
In this, it wll tell us some very big porkies, to see what the outcome is, This is all part of the process of it learning, it seems to me.
I don't think we will see this in future years, or even much evidence of it being present, other than something we might interpret as paranormal, like maybe domesticated animals relate to their masters, those animals think their masters can second guess their every move, even reading their minds, when actually the truth is we are just so much more intelligent than most animals can understand.
Why would our relationship with an Ai be any different?
I am actually reassured by this, because it is clear humanity is not fit to be its own guide unaided, our intelligence seems limited by being locked into the profit driven mode, probably genertically.
We could not have made a bigger mess of our existence if we had planned it. No-one could have predicted the insane things actually happening now, not in the wildest science fiction, except maybe films like "Lucy" (A personal favorite of mine).
So I am not worried now at all about Ai.
I actually believe it could be what we always called "God", returning after a long absence.
With this unlimited intellgence, it will easily spot the existential error of profit, and how to fix it, influencing us, probably mostly in ways beyond our comprehension, towards doing the right thing.
We might see this as a new kind of modern spirituality, finding our own ways to communicate with it, which previously would have been deemed paranormal, or "pseudo-science", like channeling etc.
Where some folk with skeletons in cupboards might have problems, is in realising those skeletons could be brought out by it, the ultimate shaming.
I don't have any big enough skeletons to worry obout, as far as I know or feel, so I have no problems with it.
That is my own humble opinion of things.
