It seems to me like whataboutery might be something that might have been thought up by a hypochritical parent fed up with their kids pointing out continuous hypochrisy in the parent, something the failing parent might think is funny, because it actually confounds the kids, for a while. Brings back some memories, and a tiny tinge of loneliness, though I have a great relationship with my only child, my daughter.
