Isn't it worth asking the question, "Why, if we previously had the tech you describe, did it stop?" Truth is it was stopped due to the known toll on human life. Like you said, safety was an issue. If safety is no longer an issue, it isn't because the technology is safer, its because we have less regard for human life now than we did then.
So things like Grenfell, Chernobyl, Fukushima, occupied bridges and buildings collapsing, and Lebanon dock explosion get more and more frequent.
Is that the kind of technological progress we really want? Is that even any kind of progress?
