Interesting view, thanks for posting. I am a long committed AR/VR proponent, but as also a practicing Systems Engineer for more than twenty years, it became apparent to me during VR AR oriented, self funded, own proposed PhD candidate work, supervised by the Open University, my project, to develop an AR VR dependent product, could never have a successful conclusion, because it needed a sustainable virtual world, which in the end is a model of the real world with some virtual enhancements. Analysis of the virtual world mimicking the real world, reveals an energy problem fundamentally limiting the virtual world, by the energy required to power the virtual world being sourced always from its users. Since effort is required by most users to produce energy, it follows that depending on users for energy is the thing unsustainable, in fact it should be the platform that supplies the energy needed by all users, which can only be done sustainably by supplying the platform with unlimited free energy, which can only be done from the sun.
This also goes for the real world and every platform actually. So we start to see the full nature of the energy problem affecting the world right now, and when we look to what is locking us into this unsustainable mode, we realise it is the business of profit, which is 100% dependent on energy which can scarcified, turned on or off by centralised powers, scarcified and withheld until the right payment or promises to pay are given.
This is a very weird situation; what those in control of energy actually gain, by withholding their energy until ransom or promises are given, is yet more energy, gathered from other people, by way of those promises, work, or money, since in the end, money is work is energy is information, all of it comes down to Joules of physical energy, 150 or so per second of which we each need 24/7 to survive for life.
So actually the "owners" or controllers of energy sources on Earth are not actually distributing energy, when we audit the flows of all forms of transport of Joules, when energy is sold for profit, the net flow of Joules is towards the owners of, or those claiming possession of, or ownership of anything we might identify as sources of energy, or information, or money; again all is energy.
At the source of all of this is capital, any capital that can be lain claim to or possessed, which all comes extracted from Earth, because it has to, in order to be anything which can be scarcified.
So we maybe start to understand that this is completely unsustainable, and if we can't see any alternative, we might start to think that the world is ending, because we can't see any other way to do things.
If we never found out how to get round this, we would absolutely be finished, not even in 100 years or even 10 years, but actually about now, understanding that the practical use of energy extracted from Earth, by way of all business for profit, is a hyperobject, all attempts to predict it's future can't be short enough, the nature of it seems to be outside our understanding, despite all our claimed intelligence, I admit despite knowing this, and even knowing the solution, I don't know how to convince humanity if what it / we need to do, that is to begin issuing massive amounts of money for free, because this is the only way we can truly transport the now significant quantities of Joules of energy being received from solar into our financial system of all money previously issued only as debt, and all business previously done or services given only for profit, issue of it instantly ends the self imposed oppression we have endured for all our time until now, we saw it momentarily during covid, confirmed by oil prices going negative the only time in history, whilst the currency issued itself went up in value in markets, it was fully sustainable, yet it was stopped, by the scarcity controllers.
So here we are now facing another war, likely to go nuclear, all for the sake of profit, now unnecessary if we just distribute the free energy being received, to all needing it, in the only way it can be distributed, by issue of free money enumerating those Joules put to use.
What has all this to do with AR VR - everything, actually it will never happen as things stand, despite the biggest aspirations of apple, still a profit driven company, it is physically impossible to create a virtual world that all people would accept because at its heart, a profit driven world has to have division, energy imbalance, which is the opposite of the aspirations of something truly to benefit all people, it just is not possible, all that can be had at profit is division, between the haves and have nots, where the haves get to exploit the have nots, none of it is sustainable.
We might realise that if / when we fix this fundamental now existential issue of all things for profit, things will be very different, we will see real human enhancing benefit from all technology including Ai and VR AR, after the profit monster is slain, by removing all possibilities of continued scarcification of energy.
Until then, those of us not seeing the way out might as well be wearing blindfolds, never mind AR, effectively we are seeing nothing, if we can't see the onky solution, the only way out, it seems to me.
I am hoping Ai might be the persuader we've needed for a long time, to make folk realise what is needed.
