Indeed, the hydrogen is converted to electricity by fuel cells, which again involves more losses, but still the chain looks good, it is something now becoming known by companies like Plug power. The hardware components needed to do this stuff is on alibaba, the Chinese seem to be much futher into it than we are.
I am currently working on some models for the end-to-end mutidisciplinary simulation of these chains, the tools I am using to establish a more reasonable generally available modeling toolset are very expensive in commercial form (Tens of $K),, not really affordable by practical engineers working on community sized systems up to a few hundred KW, but well suited to constructing and validating a less expensive, maybe even open source toolset, as well as tackling very exotic applications such as simulating and modeling your own installation.
If you are on my email subscription list, you will get news of this when I publish it, in the next few months, but hopefully much sooner. We are approaching a critically motivating point in UK, when the first wave of middle-class bankrupts due to energy price hikes will will hit the street (I am not immune!). I am hoping to have it ready by then, for maybe government attention.
Meantime, if you wish a preview you might find it by searching in my stories for "DMN" (Decision and modeling notation).
