Indeed I agree with you, the drive for profit is fundamental to the problem, whichever way we look at it, the power companies will not be complaining about the power lost, even though they know their business has to end that little bit sooner as a result of the resources running out quicker, but still they will opt to sell all out asap, as short term profit trumps all other considerations. We see it all the way through industry. I wrote a little more summarising it here:
