If hydrogen is involved it seems a no-brainer to just go to hydrogen combustion for propulsion. That would make much more sense to me. For sure there must have been many trials of hydrogen combustion aircraft to date. My understanding is a lot of soviet spacecraft were hydrogen fueled.
Musk has a problem with hydrogen, he is documented as calling it "Stupid".
But we know he can do 180 degree turns.
