The difference nowadays is we are more and more connected with alternative sources of data which are obviously often truer than mainstream.
The wisdom of a critical crowd seems to be a very powerful thing in discriminating truth from lies. Where it gets it spectacularly wrong, is when the initial view of each individual is altered by seeing spin on the views of others, before they have drawn their own conclusions.
This is exactly what happens in sensation sensitive media environments, where a story is deliberately spun to attract attention for financial or political gain. I look forward to the day when there will be nothing to gain, either financially or politically, by twisting the truth. I think this will be enabled by the trustless, profit averse technology that is blockchain.
