On the energy consumption of Bitcoin, and any others like it, the key thing to keep in mind, is that mining will only continue as long as it is cost effective. Because of the rising difficulty built into the mining protocol, at some point the cost of mining will exceed the value of the currency extracted. After that, mining, and thus power consumption will stop.
