I think this article itself is a little unfair, I don't agree with your logic. To me it makes more sense that life does have an object, it isn't to try to "Become something we are not", but yes, to become something different than we started out. It's about developing ourselves to whatever we see is better at contributing to our species, and life, than what we started out. The more we do of that in life, the more happy we feel about life, imho.
This means learning, developing, evolving, never stopping any of that.
I feel sorry for anyone that feels like they might have spent their life not doing any of that, but it is never too late to start, imho.
What is selfish about that?
Do you see how dooming itself is something that has to lead to atrocity, because it is dehumanisation of all humanity?
