I think it's a shame you leave out the part that has to have been played by women too, in the history of witch-hunts. Jealousy must have existed in those days too, just like it obviously still does now.
Women jealous of other women is something no man dares get involved with, even pointing it out invites the wrath of women, you know? ;-)
