If we consume the energy of the planet we are converting things that were not heat, to heat, which would not exist if we didn't do the consumption.
If we consume the energy of the sun then we are consuming energy that would become heat, if we didn't consume it, to things other than heat.
The former is destruction, the latter is creation.
Obviously we want to minimise destruction, but we want to maximise creation.
So to put right the effects of a species that always lived by destruction, we need as many hands to the pump of creation as we can get.
We only need to know E=MC squared to work that out, no need to dive into the effects of CO2.
