I share some of your critical view of the effects of individualsim, but I think sometimes we stop short of identifying the root cause of it, if we just dismiss it as an undesirable human trait. To me it is all about energy / money in an apparently zero sum world. To have what we need, each of us perceives hostility and mistruxt of most other humans, since we are all in competition for the same resources.

If our perceptiion was of abundance, then there would be no competition, thus natural collaboration would be the dominant force, I believe.

So, solve the energy / resources problem, and all else falls into place, it seems to me.
