I read another article, link lost now, unfortunately, but apparently written from the experience of a doctor working in A and E in a New York hospital during coronavirus. There, he advises masks, of any kind, even just a scarve, are worth wearing at all times when out and about, as the main mechanism of transmission is people touching contaminated surfaces with their hands, then unconsciously touching their face with contaminated hands.
