I love this story of connections between punk rock, and Arabic music, as much I've loved finding connections to punk rock from all kinds of cultures, especially leading back to Africa, but it goes all through all South American music too, including Cuba with Salsa and places like Venezuela with merengue, and lately all of South America with Cumbia - Check out Son Rompe Pera, look for their stage performances, they are awesome, reminiscent of the Ramones imho.
I was a big fan of the Ramones, seeing them in UK in their heyday, I loved them a lot, their adrnalin was second to none, but I have to say, they were far from the sex pistols, who in my opinion are the godfathers of punk.
The first ever song that did anything for me, the one that gave me my first ever "Eargasm" was a sex pistols B side, it was the sex pistols Johnny B Good, it was done so bad, they didnt even know the words of it, but they made it up as they were going along, and the spirit of it, that they didn't give a damn, they reall didnt, but the rythm and intensity built up anyhow to something that got me off my feet leapiing around, my friends at the time thought I was mad, I'll never forget it.
I think only the sex pistols could have done that, I don't think my music taste could have been fired up any other way. Up until then I was just pretending I loved music, but after that I was an addict, and have been now for life.
