I liked your opener too, reminds me of the punch-line of an old joke "Doctor, doctor, I seem to have a leaf hanging out of my ass..."
Anyway, you almost inspired me to write a story in response, showing the proof of how the world could change to sustainable tomorrow, then realised I already have :). You know, there was no solar energy in the days of Malthuis. We still officially don't really have much idea how solar energy works. But realisation is coming soon now the economics of continued extraction in the presence of significant solar power is becoming physically impossible.
Could there ever be too many plants on Earth?
