I grew up reading science fiction, and can tell you this view that we are simply the fertile soil needed for the next generation of life, Ai, to grow from, has been around a long time.

But now having worked with technology for thirty years "At the cutting edge", I am more convinced that technology, including Ai except maybe the special case of AGi, is just an instrument we use to extend our capabilities, but we need to reign it in, especially where it was designed just to make profit, we can see that is extremely harmful, even existantially harmful, but as long as it is VC funded, for now, it looks unlikely we will be doing any reigning in.

That is the most worrying part, it seems to me.
