I don't agree with your initial assertion - that humans are somehow completely self programmable, we are not, we inherit much more knowledge / programming from previous humans than we tend to realise, as well as characteristics which are undeniably genetically influenced.
There also seems a strong likelihood, backed by a lot of as yet circumstantial evidence, of genetic intervention.
When we follow through the end result of an "intelligent" species somehow being limited to only understanding profit, as the only valid way of doing business between one another, yet this being essentially a dishonest energy lie, charting the progression of this through a few thousand years of energy slavery, which is nothing in the natural lifespan of the planet, but which is turning out to be actually physically ending the planet, we have to question our origins.
We are certainly not a product of pure evolution. If we were, we'd still be apes, along with all the other apes, and the planet would still be safe.
Part of the genetic programing appears to have been to make us inclined to deliberately wipe out history, so we don't know much about the intervention itself. This appears to be at least part of the motivation to genocide, it's done to the poorest amongst us, the slaves at the bottom of the chain, to lighten the load of the remaining chain, to carry on delivering extracted energy, the energy in profit, to the chain, most of this planet destroying energy going to the top, and kept there, by those lucky enough to be near the top.
