I am a supporter of space exploration, as it was in the seventies and eighties also, but agree with you, this time the claimed effort to go to the moon is a distraction, it does not feel or look authentic to me.
To be honest we are seeing so much deceit by governments and big business worldwide, with the steady winding down of human beneficial aerospace technology not least in US, the claimed attempt to go to the moon seems actually quite ridiculuous, to me it isn't credible that they are now seriously putting fifty year old rocket engines in a craft, intended to fly with people on board, all the way back to the moon.
Of course I will believe it when we see it actually happening, but right now it looks like a cynical final attempt to try to prove that the neoliberal world resulting in a few billionaires playing with some old space technology can do just as much as was done with big government budgeted programs like appollo, and the Shuttle, and in UK and France we were doing Concorde.
Up until that point, we were all making real progress in aerospace benefiting humanity, it should have continued smoothly since then, and if it had, we would feasibly have been to Mars by now.
But it all got screwed when it became just for profit. One by one, the big aerospace programs were effectively defunded, and left to rot.
To claim they are now funded as they were then is a joke.
I would love to see me proved wrong, but I fear folk could be hurt in this, what appears to be a futile knee jerk reaction to folks' skepticism of our current mode of everything done for profit, I sincerely hope it does not result in more lives lost.
