I agree with your conclusions about fast food, it was with some alarm I realised recently that a very busy travel and retail grocery hub near where I live has become 100% dependent on the McDonald's within the local budget supermarket (Asda) as the only option of sit down food in the area, no alternative cafes or restaurants exist nearby, they have all closed, what remains is a twenty minute wait in what is like a food queue in a dystopian movie, in a place where little has been done to keep it looking respectable, ceiling tiles stained, missing, falling down, where we have to shell out credit in exchange for a small grease paper wrapped ball of 'burger' that looks and tastes the same no matter what we "ordered", it's a wierd experience, very different from siting in family run cafes serving home made food, as used to be all around this place (Bournemouth train station), we are falling down a hole, but I am surprised you can talk about all this without mentioning energy, or the profit monster.
Those two things are right at the heart of all that is wrong it seems to me, and only by missing them can it be remotely possible to try to predict more than another year or two for western civilisation, or actually any survival, we are facing global disaster on many counts, courtesy of our abuse of energy, and nature, which actually we should see as god, imho.
