Helion have a get out clause. They can always satisfy a contract to supply 50MW of fusion power with a 50MW hydrogen backed solar farm.
More fools Microsoft, I would say, because they have opted to not be energy independent, by choosing not to implement their own hydrogen backed solar farm, at least until after 2028.
A further point worth noting, about the theoretical concept of using Earth bound fusion is that the source of generation of hydrogen has to be taken into account, when considering whether or not it is harmful to Earth.
If we do what nature does, converting the energy of the sun to things like hydrogen, then thermodynamically we are reducing the heat energy naturally incident on Earth, by converting it to something other than heat.
Whereas, if the hydrogen we might use to fuel Earth bound fusion comes from Earth in any way, we are doing the opposite, converting those materials to heat, which has to then be added to the heat naturally incident on Earth, which is unused, since we removed a lot of nature which used to use it, in addition to ignoring it ourselves.
So why the hell not use the energy we were supposed to use, from the sun?
Because it is for free, no-one can make any profit from it, by selling it to others, it would be like Eskimos selling snowballs to one another, unless you pull off a trick like Helion, I guess, selling some of it, before everyone has it themselves anyway.
