Good article on a theme of learning from history, but I am not sure emulating the mindsets of historical characters who were an integral part of troubled times is the best result to draw from it. The demise of the Roman Empire is something that seems to be repeating itself in our modern society, and that is surely not a good thing. Shouldn’t the lesson we are learning be that this was the way not to do things? For example we have set up the same hierarchical power structures as those that failed in Rome, by inspiring people, countries, everyone to aspire to leadership in such structures, ruling all others by an iron fist.

Isn’t it about time we learned otherwise?
