Exactly. I suspect it would be more than Enrique's job is worth, to point out that probably the west has seen at least as great an increase in VPN usage than Russia. At least we had access of sorts, to most things, but now we are losing it, we are surely feeling the pain more than Russians who never had much access in the first place. And besides, would US VPN producers even supply to Russia? I know the one I use has no endpoints in Russia so would be useless there anyway. Further, if Russians are actually more interested in getting news "From the other side", and are managing that with VPNs of some kind, they actually have more access than we do, because we have no known means of getting hold of a VPN with Russian endpoints, as far as I know. A further issue is that Google appears to be starting to make life difficult for VPN users. As a long term VPN user myself with no problems, I am now seeing almost incessant challenge from Google, whenever I try to search for things I get the stupid "Questionable activity from your network" challenge, regardless of which endpoint I am using (It used to be we could get around by just changing the endpoint). Am inclined to write a standalone article on that soon, if it doesn't get any better (It won't). It should also be pointed out; Assange still in Jail is a very bad sign for the future, in all of this. He is the human Symbol of freedom of information. As long as he is in Prison, things will continue to get worse, it seems to me.
