It could have been pure intellectual ego that drove Dawson for sure, but there seems to have been an element of profit in it also, as his normal, ongoing profession was a lawyer, perhaps by such a fraud, he wished to raise sufficient funding to replace his work as a lawyer with his scientific activity.
