Cool story giving your valid perspective. I’ve been to Havana myself three times now, and it is head and shoulders my favourite of all the places I’ve visited in the world, including twice to the US. I agree also with your advice to live local in a casa rather than a hotel, though it might be worth sampling the difference. It is really easy to source very economic lodgings once you are there after perhaps beginning in a hotel. There is a spiritual quality and happiness there amongst the people that is unique, and I can honestly say it is one of the safest places in the world, if you happen to find yourself walking in the street at night. Like the people there, I am torn between whether things there should change or not. One thing I am sure of, their lack of wealth is down to the embargo. We know now that embargoes do nothing to turn people against their leaders as intended. Rather they cause people to rally behind their leaders. Castro and Guevara are still very much celebrated like saints, and probably always will be, no matter what follows. I think the best that could be done by the US is unconditionally lift the embargo, like they should everywhere, and refrain from interfering in any other way. By that, they would win much support from the people of Cuba, as well as everywhere else currently subject to embargo. After all, in the modern networked world, why should there be such friction between nations? The world is a much smaller place than it was even 30 years ago. We all need to get along in it.
