Cluster Bombs vs the Future of Ukraine
Logic
Without going into too much emotive details about “cluster munitions”, what they do, often, is fail to fully explode.
This means that areas in which a lot of cluster weapons are used over time, are effectively mined, by a high number of unexploded cluster fragments being left on and in the ground.
This is why they are considered, illegal, abhorrent, nasty, because they often maim and kill kids, as well as adults, unfortunate enough to come across them.
We hear that the US has decided to send these, in response to Ukrainian requests for more weapons.
Let’s follow the logic:
UK, as wall as many other European countries, is currently hosting a very large number of Ukrainian people, who it was always expected will one day return to Ukraine.
Let’s say the intended cluster munitions get used in Ukraine.
Now imagine the thoughts of each Ukrainian refugee, somewhere in Europe, maybe with kids, or intending to have kids, as part of the usual ambition to go back to the home they love, to have a normal life.
Would you be ready to go back to Ukraine, knowing it was effectively mined, without some kind of major clean up? Will that clean up ever be done? Who will fund it?
The US might not see any fallout, other than a loss of moral high ground, from the decision to send cluster weapons, but for the rest of us in Europe, and definitely those in Ukraine, we will see a difference.
Who will want to go home to a ruined, highly dangerous area, even after all the fighting is done?
What does the Urkrainian government, and the US, really want for Ukraine?
What do they want for Europe, after this energy war is all played out?
