Reminds of some things we saw during covid. It seems we are not learning the lesson.

To avoid maybe casting blame in the wrong direction, note that the company above might not be the ones setting their acess policy, it is being done more by search engines like Google, because well, if you can’t pay for the data, tough luck, but the end result is that often, those who need this kind of information most, and are literally dying en-mass without it, can’t have it, because they live in the wrong location.

I got the above result using a VPN with end-point set to South Africa, (Randomly chosen), but with the touch of a button I can manually change the VPN endpoint to somewhere like in USA, which I did, and got access. But the money I pay for the privelige of doing this is equivalent to about half of the typical monthly local wage of folk living in the poorest coutries. Of course they can’t afford VPNs, though there are free (Open) VPNs, those require considerable time and knowledge to get working, which again folk struggling to live don’t have. If you’ve ever tried to set up and maintain OpenVPN, you will know what I mean, its the reason there are businesses who sell it as a service, wrapped up as a convenient app.

Ironically, it is all superseded when we move to monetising solar product, as this will result in the removal of the need for all individuals, and thus all business to seek profit. There is no reason we will still be possessive about data after that.
