Brilliantly written, thanks for posting. I like to think I do give consideration to the energy required to maintain what we can maybe see is "The old world", but I admit I am completely biased, towards solar energy, which by my analysis looks like the only way out of the energy cul-de-sac we are headed into.

In truth, we thought energy comes from Earth, but it never did, it comes only from the sun. Everything on Earth is just energy stored, and we have to change money to work with the raw energy of solar now, instead of the energy extracted from Earth capital it always represented before, now it has to become live energy, or we are done, like a baby that couldn't learn how to eat food handed to it on a plate, after it was plucked from sucking the last energy of its mother.
